Managing Consultant

Ed Hare, Managing Consultant, started his career in the diplomatic corps, working on international political, economic and security issues. He then moved into consulting, specialising in working with large international technology firms to improve their competitive strategies around AI, big data, cloud and cybersecurity products, and leading many cross-border due diligence projects to assist clients make key decisions regarding new acquisitions, alliances and partnerships. Ed also handled many training assignments, developing and delivering training in commercial, government and university contexts.

As the world went increasingly online and the cybersecurity threat worsened globally in the mid-2010s, Ed began to see this as one of the defining issues of our time. Large corporations like those Ed was working with at the time could spend millions of pounds to buy their way to security, but small organisations, individuals and families were largely being left to fend for themselves. Ed therefore devoted his time increasingly to understanding how small organisations could best defend themselves without having access to large budgets. At first, Ed applied these lessons to his own consulting firm, leading a successful multi-year cybersecurity transformation to meet the increasing threat level. Then, in 2022, Ed established Keosetech in order to help other small organisations, as well as individuals and families, effectively guard against cybercrime, digitally-enabled fraud, and threats to their online privacy.

Open Source v Big Tech

Big tech products can be great for big corporate customers, providing advanced features for companies of global scale. But small businesses are often better served by solutions made by small tech firms, many of which are 'Open Source'.

What is 'Open Source'? It's software where the makers publish the 'source code' publicly and allow other software engineers to use and modify the code. Open Source is great for security, because other software developers can examine the code and highlight any security issues they find.

Open Source is also about community. Because other developers are allowed to use and modify the code, everyone benefits. One Open Source project often gives rise to many others, and customers benefit from an increasing variety of options.
